Explore and explain the relationship between a contemporary

Explore and explain the relationship between a contemporary issue and electromagnetic fields and waves. Select a contemporary issue that has an inherent connection to electromagnetic fields and waves. Prepare a short research paper that describes the contemporary issue and the relationship electromagnetic fields and waves has with it. You need to describe both sides to the contemporary issues (i.e., pros and cons). The paper should be between one to two pages in length. Be sure to use at least three (3) references used in the creation of your paper. Wikipedia is not an acceptable reference. All references will use IEEE citation format. A short research paper using at least three references in the proper citation format.

Solution

Contemporary Issue: Impact of electromagnetic fields and waves on human health.

Abstract: The rapid advancement in technology aimed for the betterment of the society has not only posed its advantages but disadvantages as well. One desires of have the best technology inorder to ease the work but indirectly he gets exposed to the negative side of it. For instance, the usage of mobiles has brought a diverse change in society while the exposure of children to the high frequency elctromagnetic waves has lead to many health complications. The RF penetration into human brains and blood cells lead to their degradation. Childhood Leukamia and symptoms related to Cancers have become common due to high usage of electromagnetic waves in the society today.

Introduction

Nowadays devices like mobiles which use frequencies upto Giga Hertz are used more commonly. Childrens have a devolping brain and their tissue and cells are more sensitive compared to that of adults. Every tissue in their body consists of more amount of water which holds the property of conduction. This amount of water and higher concentration of ions absorp RF energy easily through these communicating devices. The study [1] do far clearly mentions that the devolpment of embryo, fetus are more susceptible to these toxicants.

Impact of waves on children

The exposure to RF radiation induces heating in body tissues and alters their functioning. The possible RF electricfield interactions include (1) changes in the formation of proteins associated with ion channels, (2) changes in the binding of ligands such as Ca2 to cell receptor proteins, (3) Interaction with magnetite particles in biological tissue and radical pair interactions, potentially increasing free-radical concentrations, thereby leading to an increased risk of oxidative damage. The impact on brain can happen in infancy, childhood or adoloscence as the synapses are directly effected by the RF waves.

The importance of longer lifetime exposure has been emphasized in which acoustic neuroma occurred only after 10-year use of mobile phones. The type of mobile-phone use among children (eg, text messaging), their potential biological vulnerability, and longer lifetime exposure make extrapolation from adult studies problematic. Such scientific uncertainty can be addressed through both the application of precautionary policies and through additional research.

Similarly the epidemiologic studies have highlited the role of exposure of elecromagnetic waves on sperm mobility morphology and viability. The study[2] clearly indicated that the high usage of mobile phones led to decrease in fertiltiy. SImilarly another study signified that the exposure to power-frequency magnetic fields increases the risk of childhood leukemia through disruption of the nocturnal production of melatonin in the pineal gland.

Since the diversification of the electromagnetic (EM) environment is spreading, it is essential to estimate the EM energy absorption rate [specific absorption rate (SAR)] of a pregnant woman\'s body and her fetus under various exposure situations. The study [3] presents the EM penetration in a pregnant woman in proximity to a mobile-phone terminal using the numerical model of a woman in her seventh month of pregnancy (composed of 56 organs, which includes the intrinsic organs of a pregnant woman) based on the high-resolution whole-body voxel model of a Japanese adult woman. It was found that the SAR in the fetus strongly depends on the geometrical relationship between the fetus and the EM source, while the averaged SAR for the fetus is always lower than the RF safety guidelines under the exposure conditions.

Conclusion

It is recommended to have additional laboratory and epidemiologic studies relating to childhood leukemia and ELF magnetic field exposure. While the devices are highly exposed directly to childrens health, it is better to reform the industry ethics which involve design keeping childrens\' health in check.
