A shaft encoder is tobe sued with a 50mm radius tracking wheel to monitor linear displacement. If the encoder produces 256 pulses per revolution, what will be the number of pulses produced by a linear displacement of 200 mm?

Solution

Assuming we roll the shaft encoder on a flat surface without any slipping.

Given- circumference of a 50 mm radius wheel =2*pi*r

= 2*3.14*50=314.16 mm.

now, number of pulses produced due to a linear displacement of 200mm=

(linear displacement/circumference)* No of pulses per revolution

=(200 mm/ 314.16)(256) = 162.97 pulses

So approximately we get 163 pulses
