A person’s body mass index (BMI) is given by the formula: BMI = (weight * 703)/ (height)2 where the weight is measured in pounds and the height is measured in inches.
At age sixteen, George was 70 inches tall and weighed 200lb. Two years later, he had grown by 2 inches in height, but had lost 20 lb in weight. What was the percentage decrease in his BMI from age 16 to age 18?
a. 14.9%
b. 14.3%
c. 12.5%
d. 85.1%
Solution
BMI = (weight * 703)/ (height)2
1) height -70inches ,weight -200lb
BMI = 200*703 / 70*70 =28.69
2)height -72inches ,weight -180lb
BMI = 180*73 / 72*72 =24.41
percentage decrease in his BMI = 2-1/2 = 28.69 - 24.41 / 28.69 =14.9%
