Within the histone structure do protein modifications occur

Within the histone structure, do protein modifications occur primarily near the N-terminus or near the C-terminus? What features distinguish the structure where modifications occur?

Solution

All histone proteins consist of a core and a unstuctured tail. The N terminal of histone proteins serve as the target site for most post transcriptional modifications. These modifications include methylation, acetylation, phosphorylation,,ADP -ribosylation,etc. The N terminal of histone proteins is positively charged with many lysine and arginine residues. An important characteristic of histone tails is their ability to attract certain proteins which lead to chromatin compaction.
