Question 2:

Mendel’s Principles Mendel used mathematics and experimentation to derive major principles that have helped us understand inheritance. His ideas were totally different than the explanation for passage of characteristics from parents to offspring that was common to his time.

*List and describe his principles and describe how each contributes to genetic variability.

*How might biology have be different if his discoveries had not been lost for decades?

*Be prepared to discuss the significance of Mendel’s discoveries to modern biology.

Please answer all questions.

Solution

Mendel Gave three principles based upon his studies with garden pea

A Law of domminance When we cross two parents which are pure for thir respective charachter, only one form of charachter will apper in the next generation.Offspring that are hybrid for a trait will have only the dominant trait in the phenotype.” when you cross green into yellow flower you will always find green colour in next generation due to dominance of green colour over yellow.

B Law of seggregation hybrid between two different varieties possesses both types of parental factors, which further seggregate and seperate to their gamtes. means no blending of the genes will be there. When a gene pair in an organism contains two identical alleles, e.g., R and R, the organism is considered homozygous for that gene pair and is called a homozygote. When two different alleles are present in a single gene pair, e.g., R and r, the organism is heterozygous for that gene pair and is called a heterozygote. The red-flowered plants obtained by Mendel in the F1 generation (Rr) were heterozygotes. They were red because the allele R is dominant over r.

Law of independent assortment

When two pairs of independent alleles enter into combination in the F2, they exhibit independent dominant effects. In the formation of gametes the law of segregation operates but the factors assort themselves independently at random and freely.

These laws are very important in variability because through these laws be came to know about difference between homozygous heterozygous and other conditions . through homozygous and heterozygous we can asses whcih one is having more variations and how that variation can be utilized

There would be more advancement in genetics field if such thing would have confirmed earlier tha 1900. We would have developed new types of resistant genotypes and mapping of all the genes would have complated. we may control the gene expression . we could detect any ailment very early stage

Whatever Mendel has done it paves path for modern biology. Mendels role idsvery important , nowdaysgenetics is being utillized in every aspect of life , like dna fingerprinting , making new hybrids, froensic sciences. Nowdays moleculer work in planst field is also taking pace, so these all things happen due to his great work.
