Describe the mechanism of slip that enables a metal to be plastically deformed without fracture. Give one slip system of a metal that has an fcc crystal structure.

Solution

One of the main mechanism by which plastic deformation takes place is the slip of dislocations. Evidently any thing which causes the slipping of dislocations difficult results in lowering of ductility and vice-versa. Among many other, gain boundary is one of the major hurdles to the movement of dislocations. In smaller grains there exists large grain boundary area per unit volume. Hence grain refinement results is lowering of ductility and vice versa

FCC (eg. Cu, Ag, Au, Al, and Ni)

Slip Planes {111} Slip Directions [110]
The shortest lattice vectors are ½[110] and
[001]
According to Frank’s rule, the energy of a
dislocation is proportional to the square of the
burgers vector, b2
Compare energy
½[110] dislocations have energy 2a2/4
[001] dislocations have energy a2
Slip Direction is [110]
