Two charges of q1 = 1.0 µC and q2 = -2.9 µC are d = 0.30 m apart at two vertices of an equilateral triangle as in Figure P16.56.

(a) What is the electric potential due to the 1.0 µC charge at the third vertex, point P?
V
(b) What is the electric potential due to the -2.9 µC charge at P?
V
(c) Find the total electric potential at P.
V
(d) What is the work required to move a 3.0 µC charge from infinity to point P?

Solution

a)

Electric potential due to point charge is given by

V=KQ/r

so

V=(9*109)(1*10-6)/0.3

V=30000 Volts

b)

V=(9*109)(-2.9*10-6)/0.3

V=-87000 Volts

c)

Electric potential at point P is

VP= 30000-87000

VP=-57000 Volts

d)

Work done

W=qV =(3*10-6)*-57000

W=-0.171 J
