Solution

2(a) to analyse the axial forces.

for section A: sum of forces =0 = -Fa -200kN +40kN +20kN

Fa= -140 kN

Similarly for section BC, _Fbc +40+20 =0 shows Fbc = 60kN

Similarly for section CD Fcd = 20kN

b) axial force in segment 2 is Fbc = 60kN (positive) in tension
