FORMAL LAB REPORT FORMAT Title The title should be descriptive. For Example, Enzyme Catalysis is a better title than Lab 2. Enzyme Catalysis of Hydrogen Peroxide by Catalase is even better. Be specific II. Problem The problem or purpose of the investigation can be stated in a declarative or interrogative form. In either case it should be specific enough to relate to the specific procedures performed. For example, if you measured the rate of photosynthesis in isolated chloroplasts that had been incubated in light, dark, and in boiling water, a GOOD statement of problem would be To measure the effect of light and high temperature on the rate of photosynthesis in isolated chloroplasts OR How do light and high temperature affect the rate of photosynthesis? Examples of POOR statements of problems would be To learn something about photosynthesis To observe photosynthesis To measure the rate of photosynthesis What is the rate of photosynthesis in isolated chloroplasts? Ill. Background In this section you should discuss the underlying principles that are related to the lab problem. For, Example, in the formal lab report of the osmosis and diffusion experiments, you would discuss the basic principles of osmosis and diffusion in terms of concepts like hypertonic/hypotonic relationships, the effects of solute concentration on diffusion, water potential, and semipermeable membranes. This section should be between 200 and 400 words long and should be referenced, but do not copy the background material from the lab manual Determine the critical features that apply the experiment that you performed in class, and present them in a logical, organized manner. You should use endnotes or parenthetical notes if you quote directly. Use the \"Before doing this laboratory you should understand\" section of the objectives for each lab to get an idea of what to include here Use paragraphs when writing this section IV. Data and observations Data should be presented in tables, graphs, and/or drawings. All should be titled and clearly labeled. Graphs should be drawn on graph paper or constructed with a graphing program, they should be inserted in the appropriate location in the report NOT at the end of the paper. Best-fit lines should be drawn or constructed for your data Under some circumstances, as in the enzyme lab, a curve may be the best-fit line All observations recorded in the lab should be included. One example of observations that are not tabular or graphical in form would be the diagram of the pillbug and notes from the ten-minute observation of the pillbug behavior for Lab 11 V. Results and Discussion In this section you will analyze the data and draw conclusions. The conclusions should always reflect the data and address the problem. For example, if the problem was to measure the rate of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction, the rate should be clearly stated in the results. Do not repeat the data in this section. Instead, try to make

Solution

Title: Light Microscopy

Problem: To study the function of Compound Microscope

Background: The microscope is the primary instrument for the visualization of microorganism that is invisible to the naked eye. There are several types of microscopes, like the electron microscope, scanning probe microscope and the compound microscope. The compound microscope is the commonly used microscope despite its disadvantages over the advanced microscope, it is used for the magnification of the microorganism and the visualization of the organism invisible to naked eye. The compound microscope is responsible for the viewing of the microorganism by every beginner students.

Parts of microscope:

Eyepiece or ocular lens: Eyepiece is the lens present at the top of the microscope and is used to study the objects under the microscope and contains a magnification of about 10X or 15X.

Tube: The body tube or tube connects the eyepiece to the objective lenses.

Resolving nosepiece: Also known as the Turret has the holders for the different objective lenses and allows rotation while viewing.

Objective lens: In general there are three or four objective lenses on the microscope, with the range of 400X, 100X, and lower power. The lenses are color coded, the shortest lens for lower power and longest lens for high power lens.

Diaphragm: It controls the amount of light that passes through the opening of the stage. It is useful for the adjustment of the control of light.

Coarse adjustment knob: Used for the focus on the scanning. Usually, the low power lens is used for the movement of the tube.

Fine adjustment Knob: Used for the focus on the oil. moves the body on high power lens.

Arm: Supports the tube of the microscope and is connected to the base of the microscope.

Stage: The platform that is used for the placing of the slide for observation.

Stage clip: Stage clips holds the slide in proper place.

Condenser: The main function of the condenser lens is to focus the light on the specimen. When very high powers are used that is 400X, the condenser lenses are important. the presence of condenser lens provides sharper images when compared to the microscope without condenser lens.

Base: Provides basal support for the microscope.

Power switch: The main power switch that turns the illumination on and off.

Data and observation:

The microscope is used for the visualization of the prepared microscopic slides and the prepared slides under different magnification. The procedure for use is as follows:

Result and discussion:

The compound microscope is used for the visualization for the microorganism and should be handled with care and kept safely after use. following is the precautions taken during use:

Note: Attach a labeled diagram of the Microscope with the report.
