Object O stands on the central axis of a spherical mirror. The table gives object distance p, the type of mirror, and focal distance f. Find the image distance i and the lateral magnification m of the object, including signs. Describe the image. (Select all that apply.) real virtual upright inverted on the same side of the mirror as O on the opposite side of the mirror as O

Solution

The thin lens equation is

1/ p + 1/ q = 1/ f

Here p is obejct distance, q is image distance and f is focal length

        1/ q = 1/ f - 1 / p

                = 1/ 40 cm - 1/ 28 cm

              q = - 93.3 cm

Since the the q value is negative, the image is formed in the same side of the object.

magnification of the image

M = - q / p

    = 3.33

Hence the image is virtual and uprighted image.

 Object O stands on the central axis of a spherical mirror. The table gives object distance p, the type of mirror, and focal distance f. Find the image distance
