When a codon is replaced by a synonymous codon, it is known as silent mutation. When a codon is replaced by a stop codon, it is known as nonsense mutation. When a codon is replaced by a non-synonymous codon, it is known as missense mutation.

A silent mutation does not create any problem for the organism. A nonsense mutation results in premature termination of translation; a shorter protein is produced, which is almost always non-functional. A missense mutation replaces one amino-acid in a protein with another. This can have all types of effects including loss of function, accentuated function, or no functional change at all.
