In at least 100 words Explain why experimenters usually prioritize internal validity over external validity when it is difficult to achieve both.
Solution
For a research study to be considered valid, it should fulfill two criteria.
It should provide results that rule out other hypothesis other than the one being tested
It should provide results that can be applied to other scenarios.
Internal validity is when the research provides a positive result in testing a hypothesis. External validity is when the result can be replicated or can be applied to a generalized population or situation.
Studies with high internal validity have low external validity and vice versa. But that can be changed with careful design of the experiment.
The balance between internal and external validity depends upon sample size and diversity and experimental conditions.
Whether or not a study supports external validity, the results of an experiment cannot be dismissed. Many a times, experiments are designed to be controlled to test the effect of various environments and components on the subjects/samples. Hence, internal validity is prioritized over external validity.
