Statics Question:

Explain in clear and concise sentences what kind of dimensions are on the X and Y axes when you work with distributed loads. Also explain how you replace a distributed loads with concentrated loads. Discuss in detail. THIS SHOULD TAKE A MINIMUM OF 5 SENTENCES TO EXPLAIN.

Solution

Distributed loads are spead over the entire length (or area). Therefore, the dimensions are meansure per unit. For example if load is distributed per unit length, then dimension would be N/m (Newton/Meter) and if the load is distributed per unit area, then dimension would be N/m^2 (Newton/Squared_Meter).

In order to replace the distributed load with concentrated load, we assume that the entire load is acting at one point, i.e. mid-point of total length when the the load is distributed linearly (and ceter of mass when the load is ditributed per unit area).

When load is distributed per unit length, we replace the distriuted load after multiplying the per unit length load with the length of the object. This new quantity is the concentrated load and it acts at the mid point.

When the load is distributed per unit area, we multiply the per unit area load with the area of the object. This new quantity is concentrated load and it acts at the center of mass of the object.
