If the mass of Venus is 4.867 * 10^24 kg and its mean radius is 6052 km, calculate: a) the acceleration due to gravity on the surface of Venus; b) the force of gravity felt by a 100-kg person on the surface of this planet.
Solution
mass of Venus M= 4.867 * 10 24 kg
Mean radius R= 6052 km
= 6052 x10 3 m
a) the acceleration due to gravity on the surface of Venus g=GM/R 2
Where G = Gravitational constant = 6.67 x10 -11 Nm 2/kg 2
Substitute values you get , g =(6.67x10 -11)(4.867x10 24) /(6052x10 3) 2
= 8.863 m/s 2
b) the force of gravity felt by a 100-kg person on the surface of this planet F = ma
Where ,m = mass of person = 100 kg
Therefore F = 100 x 8.863
= 886.3 N
