Discuss the differences between AM signals and FM signals ba
Discuss the differences between AM signals and FM signals, based on your experience with radio technologies. Which do you believe travels farther, AM or FM? Which has greater range, and why?
Solution
Differences between AM signal and FM signal:
As the Amplitude Modulation is a low frequency, it travels farther than than the FM because they propagate along the surface of the earth. AM has the greater range because of the loner wavelength.
| Amplitude Modulation | Frequency Modulation |
| 1. Amplitude modulation (AM) is the one in which the amplitude of a carrier signal is varied in accordance with amplitude of the modulating or message signal. | 1.Frequency modulation (AM) is the one in which the frequency of a carrier signal is varied in accordance with the frequency of the modulating or message signal. |
| 2.The frequency and phase of the carrier signal remains same. | 2. The amplitude and phase of the carrier signal remains same. |
| 3. The AM works between 540 to 1650 KHz. | 3. The FM works between 88 to 108 MHz. |
| 4. Signal quality is less in AM compared to FM. | 4. Signal quality is high in FM compared to AM. |
