In a statistics course, a linear regression equation was computed to predict the final exam score from the score on the first test. The equation of the least-squares regression line was: y = 8.5 + 0.85x where y represents the final exam score and x is the score on the first exam. Suppose Joe scores a 90 on the first exam. What would be the predicted value of his score on the final exam?

Solution

The equation of the least square regression line is

y =8.5+0.85x

y = Final exam score and x =Score on first exam

For a student Joe x = 90. With the given equaton we predict his final score as

y =8.5+0.85(90)

= 8.5+76.5

= 85.0

Hence option B
