You decide to stop and buy some snack food. The store sells candy by the pound. How many pounds of chocolate covered peanuts that sell for $6 per pound would you need to add to 5 pounds of jumbo chocolate malt balls that sell for $10 per pound to make a mixture worth $8 per pound?

Solution

Let the weight of peanuts be x

peanuts are sold for $6 per pound

Jumbo chocolate malt balls that sell for $10 per pound

let the weight of jumbo chocolate covered peanuts be \"y\"

mixture weight = 1 pound

therefore

x +y = 1         (1)

and total cost of mixture per pound = $8

total cost of mixture per pound = (total cost of peanuts + total cost of chocolate) / total weight

(x*6 +y*10)/(x+y) = 8

6x +10y = 8x +8y

2y = 2x

x = y   (2)

from (1) and (2)

x = 1/2 pound and y = 1/2 pound
