An air-track glider is attached to a spring. The glider is pulled to the right and released from rest at t = 0 s. It then oscillates with a period of 2.0 s and a maximum speed of 35 cm/s.

(a) What is the amplitude of the oscillation?
cm

(b) What is the glider\'s position at t = 0.25 s? (Measure relative to the equilibrium point, taking right to be positive.)
cm

Solution

a)

angular frequency

W=2pi/T =2pi/2

W=3.14 rad/s

Maximum Speed is given by

Vmax=AW

So Amplitude

A=Vmax/W =0.35/3.14 =0.1114 m

A=11.14 cm

b)

The Glider position at t is given

X=ACos(Wt) =11.14Cos(pi*0.25)

X=7.88 cm
