1. Explain why the AC output of the wind turbine cannot be utilized directly. And discuss how power electronics help to handle this problem.

Solution

AC output of wind turbine is of not constant frequency output because of change in wind speed. The rotor of wind turbine generator rotates with different speed based on input mechanical speed.

The electrical appliances which work on AC voltage at constant frequency with small variation.

To maintain constant frequency the generated output from wind turbine is fed into power electronic circuits i.e cyclo converter or rectifier - inverter circuit.

Cyclo converter is a power electronic circuit which converts power from one frequency to power at other frequency based on switching control.

Rectifier - inverter circuit is another power electronic circuit which first converts AC power to DC power using rectifier circuit and then convert AC power using inverter circuit at required frequency.
