Police officers and law enforcement professionals are afforded the ability to exercise significant discretion when performing their day to day duties. Unfortunately, misuse of discretion can lead to abuses. One type of discretionary abuse involves excessive use of force.

Discuss some of the reasons law enforcement officers resort to utilizing excessive force.

Solution

There can be different reasons for urilization of excessive force. Some of these reasons are;

1. Impartiality towards a particular community. This reason is evident from the fact of use of excessive force in the indian controlled region of jammu & kashmir. The indian forces have been using excessive forces to control crowds and protestors who are protesting against indian authorities. This kind of treatment by indian forces is not seen in other parts of india. One of the reason for this use of excessive force is beleived to be the people of kashmir who are being treated differently from the rest of indians in every field .

2. Inability in crowd control : When police fails to control protestors, they resort to excessive force.

3. Religion: Religion is regarded as one reason for use of excessive force. When police officials and law enforcement agencies are deali g with people from ithet faith, it is usually observed that excessive force is being used.

4. Disobeyment: When law enforcemnet people are disobeyed, excessive force is being utilsed by them.o such people.
