Why the sample cuvette cell is required to use quartz materi
Why the sample cuvette (cell) is required to use quartz material?
Solution
A cuvette is a small tube of circular or square cross section, sealed at one end, made of plastic, glass, or fused quartz (for UV light) and designed to hold samples for spectroscopic experiments.
Glass will absorb radiation below 320nm whereas quartz will allow transmission of the UV wavelengths.
So use glass cuvettes for wavelengths in the visible range from 380nm to 780nm and quartz cuvettes for wavelengths below 380nm.
We generally use spectrometer for UV radiations which is absorbed by the glass cuvette but quartz cannot.
Synthetic quartz can be used in deep UV applications and is recommended for fluorescent applications, as it does not exhibit background fluorescence.
