Assignment 1 is to find at least 5 metals and 5 non metals used in today\'s manufacturing processes. Please provide a description of the material, a picture of the material, and at least 2 pictures and descriptions of products manufactured with each of them. Your task is to write a 4-6 page report on metals and nonmetals. Your report must contain to a minimum: an introduction, definitions, properties, classifications, types of products/industries that they are used for, etc.

Solution

Metals-Metals can be said to be as a collection of atoms embedded in a sea of electrons, which are highly mobile.

Properties of metal

1. Metals are conductive in nature

2.Metals are malleable and ductile in general

3.Metals are solid except Mercury

4.Metals have high melting and Boiling Point

5.Metals are sonorous that is produce sound when beaten

1.Iron

Iron is a chemical element with symbol Fe and atomic number 26. It is a metal in the first transition series. It is by mass the most common element on Earth, forming much of Earth\'s outer and inner core. It is the fourth most common element in the Earth\'s crust.

Iron is common matal used in every industries from a small scale to big industries everyone use it .It produces various alloy due to its good electrical and thermal properties. It is ductile that is why it is use in wire industries.

It is also used in automobile industries

2.Nickel  is a chemical element with symbol Ni and atomic number 28. It is a silvery-white lustrous metal with a slight golden tinge. Nickel belongs to the transition metals and is hard and ductile. Pure nickel, powdered to maximize the reactive surface area, shows a significant chemical activity, but larger pieces are slow to react with air under standard conditions because an oxide layer forms on the surface and prevents further corrosion (passivation).

3.Gold is a chemical element with the symbol Au and the atomic number 79. In its purest form, it is a bright, slightly reddish yellow, dense, soft, malleable and ductile metal. It is used in Jwellary.

4.Silver is the metallic element with the atomic number 47. Its symbol is Ag,A soft, white, lustrous transition metal, it exhibits the highest electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and reflectivityof any metal.

5.Zinc is a chemical element with symbol Zn and atomic number 30. It is the first element in group 12 of the periodic table.Itis used as Anti-corrosion and batteries.Zinc oxide is widely used as a white pigment in paints and as a catalyst in the manufacture of rubber to disburse heat. Zinc oxide is used to protect rubber polymers and plastics from ultraviolet radiation

Non-Metals

Properties

1. Metals are non-conductive in nature

2.Metals are brittle in general

3.Metals havelow melting and Boiling Point

5.Metals are not sonorous as compare to metal

5.They are non -magnetic in nature

1.Carbon  is a chemical element with symbol C and atomic number 6. On the periodic table.

Carbon is an indipensable element in industry. By far, the greatest single use of carbon is in the form of coke for the iron and steel industry. The major portion of this coke is used in the reduction of iron ore in blast furnaces. As in the rubber industry, the major applications for carbon blacks are in the printing ink, paint, paper and plastic industries. Minor amounts are used in the manufacture of dry cells and carbon brushes, and as insulation. The largest single application for gas phase activated carbons is in the recovery of volatile organic solvents from air or vapor mixtures. Another large application is in the purification and separation of natural and industrial gases.Main applications for pyrographite and the fiber forms of manufactured graphite are found as components for rockets, missile and other aerospace vehicles.

2.Helium used inBalloons - Most widely known application
Helium (He) is the lightest and stable gas.As a Coolant - He can be cooled to cryogenic tempratures easily and is hence used as coolant.
e.g. - cooling super-conducting magnets in MRI scanners.

As a Welding - It is used as it\'s an inert gas. Sometimes can be substituted by other noble gases. As aLeak detection - Being the smallest and stable atom, it is used for leak detection in structures (esp. weldings). Here, smaller the atom, faster it diffuses and hence it is used (Hydrogen may react to form Hydride and is dangerous to use)
3. Argon is a versatile industrial gas used in weldingapplications, such as the welding of specialty alloys, and in the production of light bulbs and lasers. As an inert gas, it can also be used to provide an oxygen- and nitrogen- free environment for heat treating processes.

4.Nitrogen  gas has a variety of applications, including serving as an inert replacement for air where oxidation is undesirable; As a modified atmosphere, pure or mixed with carbon dioxide, to nitrogenate and preserve the freshness of packaged or bulk foods (by delaying rancidity and other forms of oxidative damage).

5.Chlorine is commonly used as an antiseptic and is used to make drinking water safe and to treat swimming pools. Large amounts of chlorine are used in many industrial processes, such as in the production of paper products, plastics, dyes, textiles, medicines, antiseptics, insecticides, solvents and paints.
