May rides her bike the same distance that Leah walks May rid

May rides her bike the same distance that Leah walks. May rides her bike 10km/h faster than Leah walks. If it takes May 1 h and Leah 3 h to travel that distance, how fast does each travel ?

Solution

Let s = L\'s walking speed
then
(s+10) = M\'s biking speed
:
The both travel the same distance, write a distance equation D = time * speed
:
L\'s dist = M\'s dist
3s = 1(s+10)
3s = s + 10
3s - s = 10
2s = 10
s = 5 mph is L\'s walking speed
and
5 + 10 = 15 mph is M\'s biking speed
;
:
Confirm solution by finding the distance of each
3(5) = 1(15)

May rides her bike the same distance that Leah walks. May rides her bike 10km/h faster than Leah walks. If it takes May 1 h and Leah 3 h to travel that distance
