Write an equation in standard form of the line passing through the points (4, 6) and (6, 14). The equation is. (Type your answer in standard form.)

  Solution
Let the equation of the required line in the slope –intercept bform be y = mx +c, where m is its slope. Then m = (14-6)/(6-4) = 8/2 = 4. On substituting m = 4, the equation of the line changes to y = 4x +c. Now, since the line passes through the point (4,6), on substituting x = 4 and y = 6 in the line’s equation, we get 6 = 4*4 +c or, c = 6-16 = -10. Then, the line’s equation changes to y = 4x-10 or, 4x –y = 10. Thus the line’s equation in standard form is 4x –y = 10.
