So first let us see what is an electromagnetic brake and why is it called so.

Electromagnetic brakes are nothing but brakes which operate electrically but transfer the torque mechanically. Hence the name Electromagnetic brakes.

It mainly consists of 3 parts.

Field, armature and Hub. When the armature is attracted to the magnetic field the stopping force is transferred into the field housing and into the machine frame decelerating the load and once the field starts to degrade flux falls rapidly and the armature separates. This explains basic engagement and disengagement of brakes.

Advantages:

1. They have better heat dissipation capacity than the normal brakes.

2. Higher efficiency.

3. The cost of components are less.

Disadvantages:

1. The installation of this brake in the vehicle is difficult due to space constraints.
