INDIGENOUS LAND DEFENSE

SEPTEMBER 17, 2017

On the 10th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Indigenous land defenders across the country continue to protect our inherent rights and territories. The Canadian Government under Justin Trudeau continue to make false claims that they support Indigenous rights and self-government, yet non-consensual resource extraction and land theft continues. Idle No More stands in solidarity with these land defenders. This update highlights some land defense sites and invites Indigenous nations and our allies to join the resistance.

Land rights: Defending Kanehsata:ke

On July 11, 1990, the people of Kanehsatà:ke endured a 78-day siege known as the \"Oka Crisis\" in order to protect their land from a 9 hole golf course expansion by the Municipalitié d\'Oka and private developers. The development would also see the removal of Kanien\'kehá: a burial ground and condominium development. At the same time, the community of Kahnawake blocked the busy Mercier bridge on the south shore of Montreal in support of their sister community of Kanehsatà:ke. While the construction the golf course expansion and condominium development was prevented, the long-standing historical land dispute was never settled.

1)Summarize what you have learned from the article.

2)Does this help or hinder the status of Aboriginal peoples currently? Is it a replay of history?

3)What are your personal reflections on the article?

Solution

1) Indegeneous land defenders are fighting to protect peoples inherent rights and territories from the canadian government who always makes false claims that they support indegeneous rights and self government but still land theft as well as resource extraction from the territories of the people continues. As a result land defenders are planning to agitate for their rights so they invited other indegenous nations along with their allies to join the resistance. one such example for agitation is Defending Kanehsata:ke, people of kanehsata:ke endured a 78 day siege known as \"oka crisis\" in order to protect their land from 9 hole golf course expansion by the muncipalitie d\'oka and private developers and even they wanted to remove the burial ground for condonium development. In order to save their land they not only endured sieze for 78 days but also they got help from kahanawake a sister community of kanehsata:ke who blocked the Mercier bridge on the south shore of Montreal in support to them which resulted in prevention of  golf course expansion and condominium development but long standing historical dispute was never settled.

2) The call for agitation in order to protect their right will help the status of Aboriginal people currently beacuse from the historical incident Defending Kanehsata:ke showed that peole can fight for thier rights and get what they wanted. Yes it is almost a replay of a history because the government left no choice as they are always creating the trouble for people and they failed to support indegenous rights and self government even after 10 yeras of establishment of United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

3) My personal reflections on the article are people are fighting for there rights as the canadian government failed to protect their rights they only give statements that they are in favour of people indegenous rights but the incidents such as non-consensual resource extraction and land theft can make sure that they completely failed. For the development of the country land must be needed but land theft is not the option to do so if the government had a proper reason then they can ask the people of the country to comeforward for helping in the devolpment of country and they must make sure that no such incidents such as land thefts and resource extractions illegally will never occur. The people must also try to negotiate with the government and wait for the help from the government even then they didnot got any response from government and still no improvement in the situation then they must fight for their rights such that the problem must be solved completely.
