Enter the y -intercept as a point. Click here to enter or edit your answer The Y -intercept is e. Write an equation for the polynomial function (assume the least degree possible). Click here to enter or edit your answer f (x)

Solution

a. The real zeros are -3 (multiplicity 1)

                               -1 (multiplicity 2)

                                 2(multiplicity 1).

b. We can observe that f(x) - as x ±. Therefore, the graph represents an even function with a negative leading coefficient.

The polynomial is p(x) = a( x+3)( x+1)2(x-2) , where a is an arbitrary real number. Further, since p(0) = 3, we have 3 = a(3)(1)(-2) or, -6a = 3 so that a = -1/2. Then the polynomial is p(x) = -1/2( x+3)( x+1)2(x-2).

c. The leading coefficient is negative.

d. The y-intercept is where x = 0, i.e. (0,3)
