All the forces are along the axial direction and hence only tensile or compressive forces will be induced at any point inside the member. To find the internal force at A, calculate the resultant force at either side (left or right) of A with proper sign convention. To the left of A, only only one axial force exists, that is, 3 kip.

Hence internal force at A = 3 kip
