1.Polling women. A New York Times Poll on women’s issues interviewed 1025 women randomly selected from the United States, excluding Alaska and Hawaii. The poll found that 47% of the women said they do not get enough time for themselves.
(a) The poll announced a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points for 95% confidence in its conclusions. Make a 95% confidence statement about the percent of all adult women who think they do not get enough time for themselves.
(b) Explain to someone who knows no statistics why we can’t just say that 47% of all adult women do not get enough time for themselves.
(c) Then explain clearly what 95% confidence means.
Solution
 a)
at 95% confidence level the percent of women who think they donot get enough time for themselves is between (47 + 3% , 47% -3%)
 i.e., (50%,44%)
b)
since the data doesnot consistes of entire population it is only relevant to certail sample , hence one cannot extend it to entire population
c)
95% confidence means that one say that 95% of time the true mean is within 3 percentage points
