Percentage proportion or probabilityin your own words using
Percentage, proportion, or probability—in your own words, using between 25 and 50 words for each, describe the following:
a. How percentage is different than the other two
b. How proportion is different than the other two
c. How probability is different than the other two
d. How all three are basically the same thing
Solution
a) Percentages are calcuated out of 100, Which is not necessary in proportions of probability
b) proportions are special kinds of ratios where the denominator is the total
while the numerator is a subpart of the total. This tells us what part the numerator is of the
total . Percentages are just a form of the proportion based on 100 people.
To calculate a percentage we simply multiply a proportion by 100
c) Probability is related to happening of the event
d) They are different ways of expressing the same thing. % means how many hundredths there are. 0.1 expresses the same thing using the tenths position. You could also express it as 1/10, which is probably the more classical way of stating a proportion, since it uses the slash to indicate the denominator.
