A gatekeeper is an indigenous member of the community who has either formal or informal influence with the culture. They can be formally elected or selected leaders who everyone can count on to get things done. These gatekeepers are powerful since they can transition their influence to a person, an idea, or product they are endorsing or rejecting. They use their influence to persuade others to follow his or her head.
There are three types of gatekeepers who movie ideas, one is the “connectors’ who have broad circles and are unique. Then we have the “mavens” who have a deep level of information and willing to share information with others. And the “salesman” who are passionate purveyors of ideas, products, or people.
An informal gatekeeper can be a gatecrasher, any person or community who tries to gain admittance without an invitation or sanction. Theew is a price to pay and often bring value in the person becoming a part of the community. They bring skills and resources that are value within the community. Some form of currency or value needs to be offered in exchange for admission. Community is not where a person is living, but where the person participates, shares experiences, and has valued relationships with others.
