You task is to research and find one product that has antimicrobial properties/ingredients. There b a catch the product\'s purpose CANNOT be designed to have antimicrobial properties. For example, Neosporin ointment does not work- yes it has antimicrobial ingredients but that is what the product is designed for. This assignment is for you to practice your googling/research, problem solving skills and ability to follow directions. So, you are looking for a product that is used for something else but also has antimicrobial properties. Another catch: foods and drinks are not acceptable. Name of Product: Intended Use: Antimicrobial Ingredient: Microbial Targets of Ingredient (ex. bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc): Brief explanation of how the antimicrobial ingredient works (Le. damages the cell membranes, inhibits ribosome during protein synthesis). Also include whether the ingredient is -cidal (kills) or -static (inhibits growth) with appropriate root word (Le. herbicide kills plants):
1. Name of the product: Bacitracin/ Gramicidin
2. Intended use: Minor skin injuries.
3. Antimicrobial ingredient: Bacitracin Zinc 500 (active ingredient),
Bacitracin methylene disalicyclate salt(may or may not present, if present,in traces),
Petrolatum and Mineral Oil.
4. Microbial Targets of Ingredients: Bacteria (most effective)
Viruses and fungi (Ineffective)
5. Explaining how ingredient work:
Bacitracin zinc intereferes with the dephosphorylation of the 55-carbon, biphosphate lipid transport molecule C55-isoprenyl pyrophosphate, which carries the building blocks of the peptidoglycan bacterial cell wall outside the inner membrane for construction. Bacitracin zinc binds divalent transition metal ions (Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II)) which binds and oxidatively cleave DNA.
