Snoopy the dog is on a 18-ft long chain that is attached to the corner of a garage (see the picture below). If the chain does not allow him to go past either of the adjacent sides of the garage, how much space does Snoopy have to roam? Use = 3.14 and round your answer to the nearest tenth.

Solution:
Since garage is in shape of rectangle therefore it makes an angle of 90 with center and therefore snoopy can roam only 3/4 portion of circle that can be drawn with having 18 feet long chain
Area of circle = r^2
where radius r = 18 ( length of chain )
= 3.14 x (18)2
= 1017.36 ft2
Now Snoopy can roam = (3/4) of total area circle
= (3/4) x 1017.36
= 763.02 ft2
