For the beam shown below determine the maximum shear stress

For the beam shown below, determine the maximum shear stress within the beam and the (x, y) location where it occurs.

Solution

>> As, given in hint : By= 130.5 kN and Cy = 142.5 kN

>> Now, Taking a portion of beam of length \"x\" from left side,

Case 1. 0 <= x < 3 m

So, Now, Balancing the forces in vertical direction,

=> V = Shear Stress = - 15 kN

=> V = - 15 kN ..............(1)......

Case 2. 3 <= x < 9 m

So, Now, Balancing the forces in vertical direction,

=> V = - 15 + By - 40*(x - 3)

=> V = 235.5 - 40*x ..............(2)......

Case 3. 9 <= x < 13 m

So, Now, Balancing the forces in vertical direction,

=> V = - 15 + By - 40*6 + Cy

=> V = 18 kN ..............(3)......

>> So, From (1), (2) & (3),

Shear Stress, V is Maximum at , B , i.e. V = 235.5 - 40*(3) = 115.5 kN ...........ANSWER....
