You have a customer who must perform a number of high-speed data transfers between her laptop and several different servers on a regular basis as part of her job. Traditionally, she has used USB 2.0, but she asks you if she should be using FireWire 800 instead. What do you tell her?

A. You tell her that USB 2.0 has a higher data transfer rate than FireWire 800 (IEEE 1394) and USB is more common on laptops than FireWire.

B. You tell her that FireWire 800 has a higher data transfer rate than USB 2.0 and FireWire connections are more common on laptops than USB 2.0 connections.

C. You tell her that parallel SCSI has higher data transfer rates than either USB 2.0 or FireWire 800 and this standard has been implemented on all new laptops.

D. You tell her that while FireWire 800 has higher data transfer rates than USB 2.0, FireWire ports are less common on laptops than USB 2.0 ports.

Solution

USB 2.0:

This is also called as Hi speed USB; it is an external bus to transfer data at speed rates up to 480Mbps. This is released in April 2000.

Fire Wire 800(IEEE 1394):

A very fast External bus, with data transfer rates up to 400 Mbps. Here there are two types like 1394a which transfers up to 400Mbps of data, whereas 1394b transfers 800Mbps of data.

This is developed by Apple with trademark name as FireWire. Recently apple switched from USB 2.0 to Fire Wire for their Mac’s.

SCSI

Stands for Small Computer System Interface, First version SCSI adopted in 1986, was a 8 bit version with 5Mbps of data transfer allowed up to 8 devices to connect. Latest version is 16 bit ultra 640(Fast-320) SCSI was introduced in 2003 has 640 Mbps transfer speed connecting up to 16 devices with 12 meter cable.

When comparing these three technologies, I can say that Fire Wire 800 has high data transfers than USB 2.0. But this Fire wire is less common on laptops than USB2.0 ports. As USB 2.0 ports are wide spread.
