When a child emptied his coin bank, he had a collection of pennies, nickels, and dimes. There were 20 more pennies than dimes and the number of nickels was triple the number of dimes. If the coins had a value of $5.40, how many of each type coin were in the bank?

Solution

1 penny=1 cent

1 nickel=5 cents

1 dime=10 cents

Let \'x\' be the numbers of dimes.

according to question

number of pennies= x+20

number of nickels=3x

Therefore,

10x+(x+20)+5(3x)=(100)5.40                       (converted into cents)

=> 26x+20=540

=> 26x=520

=>x=20

Therefore, number of dimes=20

number of pennies =20+20=40

number of nickels=3(20)=60

 When a child emptied his coin bank, he had a collection of pennies, nickels, and dimes. There were 20 more pennies than dimes and the number of nickels was tri
