In some breeds of sheep, the presence of horns is expressed from the H^h allele at an autosomal gene. This allele is dominant in rams and recessive in ewes over the H^P allele. If a female with horns is mated with a male without horns, what will be the genotype of the lambs and what will they look like when they grow up?
Solution
Female lamb with horns is mated with male lamb without horns. The horns are encoded by a dominant allele Hh on autosome. The hornless allele is Hp. The cross between horned female and hornless male results in horned lamb. This is becauseall the offspring produced will have the heterozygous genotype Hh Hp. Since, Hh is dominant allele, the individual with hetyerozygous genotype expresses horns. The lambs look with horns when they are grown up. Figure 1 is correct.
Hh Hh X Hp Hp
| male / female | Hp | Hp |
| Hh | Hh Hp | Hh Hp |
| Hh | Hh Hp | Hh Hp |
