3. Marvin, who is claimed as a qualifying child by his parents, received interest income of $8,600 and wages of $7,100 for 2014. How much of this will be taxed at his parents’ highest MTR?
Solution
1.
Calculation for taxable income is done as following
Line 1 (earned income + $350) $1950
Line 2 Minimum Amount $1000
Line 3 compare line 1& 2. Enter larger amount $1950
Line 4 Maximum Amount $6200
Line 5 compare line 3 & 4. Enter smaller amount $1950
Line 6 Enter gross income $5100
Since value in line 6 is higher than that of line 5. So income tax return must need to be filed.
Standard deduction: Smaller of line 3 & line 4 and it is $1950.
Taxable income = 3500+1600 – 1950 = $3150
