Explain the effects of esmolol on SVR?
Solution
Esmolol is a drug which belogs to the group of beta blockers. It decreases the heart’s workload and helps the heart to beat regularly. SVR is systemic vascular resistance. Esmolol decreases heart rate and increases the systemic vascular resistance and preload slightly. This increase in SVR can be owed to the alpha adrenergic block.
(However, the effect of esmolol on SVR is not consistent in the literature. Long term use of betablockers can reduce the vascular resistance. )
