The U of M hockey coach has asked you to give a pre-season nutrition talk to some of their new team members. The coach is mainly interested in learning about the concept of energy expenditure and how this can be measured among his athletes. After giving your nutrition talk, you are also confronted with many questions from players who want to learn more about respiratory quotient. Please answer the following questions for this practical application.

1. What 3 factors determine total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) and what else influences TDEE?

2. What technique is useful to estimate TDEE and why?

3. Alex, one of the U of M hockey players, has hid respiratory quotient measured since he wanted to know more about what fuel he was catabolizing for energy. His RQ came up as 0.7. Based on this RQ, what fuel was Alex oxidizing for energy and how does this number compare to other RQ values?

Solution

1). The three primary factors that influence total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) are,

a). Resting metabolic rate (RMR)

b). Thermal effect of food

c). Physical work done during a day

RMR is the energy required to carry out the basic functions of the body, i.e. respiration, digestion, heartbeat, etc. Diet-induced thermogenesis is the energy expenditure above the resting metabolic rate to process and store the food. The digestion/processing of proteins into usable or storage form require more energy than any other nutrients. The physical work done during a day is the primary determinant of energy expenditure. If more physical work is done, more will be the TDEE and vice versa.
