Write an equation for each of the relationships that are described below. Then solve the equation for the unknown. (Do not forget to start by defining a variable to represnt the unknown value.)

A. 17.5 is equal to 2 times some number. What is the number?

B. The sum of 3 times some number and 12 is 42. What is the number?

C. 1/4 of some number is 4.3. What is the number?

D. Some number is 4 times as large as 9.8. What is the number?

E. Some number is equal to 1/3 of the sum of 88.2, 93.5, and 64. What is the number?

F. The change from some number to 12.5 is -5. What is the number?

G. Measuring some number in units of 12 is 3.5. What is the number?

Solution

a) Let\'s say no as x => 17.5=2x => x = 17.5/2
                                 => x = 8.75

b) Let\'s say no as y , it means 3y+12=42
                                      3y = 30
                                      y = 10
c) Let\'s say no as x => x/4 = 4.3
                         x=17.2
d) Let\'s say no as x => 4x = 9.8
                        x = 9.8/4 => x=2.45
