Find x and y in terms of a and b.

Solution

ax + by=0

x+y=8

x=8-y

Substituting this value of x in ax+by=0 we get

a(8-y) + by=0

-ay+by + 8a=0

-8a= y(b-a)

y= -8a/(b-a)

x= 8-y

therefore we get x= 8+ 8a/(b-a)

                              = (8b-8a+8a)/(a-b)= 8b/(b-a)
