Identify and discuss the main reasons that prisons are overcrowded and the methods used to control overcrowding discussed in your textbook. Do you think the issue of prison overcrowding is one that can be fixed? Why, or why not?

Solution

America is not the most criminal culture on earth. It has the most prisoners because it has too many laws. Most prisoners are locked away for drug violations than all violent crimes combined. It is an upfront to the founding principles of America to lock peaceful people into cells just because they consume or sell drugs. It is ineffective to check drug abuse and leads to more violent crime, gang warfare, and all other problems that accompanied alcohol prohibition.

One of the ways to reduce overcrowding in jails is to ensure fewer people spend years behind bars for non-violent drug crimes. Allow drug offenders to serve shorter sentences but it has to do a lot with federal mandatory-minimum sentencing laws. Lowering the time spent in prison from 85 percent to 70 percent of their sentences. And, allow prisoners to reduce their sentences through credit for good behavior.
