A bag contains red, green, and blue marbles. 1/8 of the marbles are blue, there are 1/6 as many red marbles as green marbles, and there are 25 fewer red marbles as green marble. Determine the total number of marbles in the bag.

Solution

Number of red marbles = x

Number of Green marbles = 6x

Number of Green Marbles - Number of Red marbles = 25

6x - x = 25

x = 5

Hence there are 5 red marbles and 30 green marbles in the bag

Let the total number of marbles be y, hence blue marbles will be equal to y/8

5 + 30 + y/8 = y

35 + y/8 = y

35 = 7y/8

y = 40

Hence the total number of marbles in the bag is equal to 40
