You have designed a pipe and need to test it using a hydrostatic pressure test. The pipe has an outer diameter of 88.9 mm and an inner diameter of 76.19mm. The allowable stress for the pipe is 9652.4 Kpa at 23 Celsius and the pipe is tested at the same temperature as the design values. The pipe was tested with a pressure of 1800 Kpa for 10 minutes was this an acceptable pressure for the hydrostatic testing? Explain why? Please examine the cross section of bio composite and describe the composite layup structure in regards to plys/layers, orientation of the layers and how they influence the structure. area of cohesion/adhesion, weak boundary layers, and any flaws in the structure that could affect the performance of the composite.
Solution
Thickness t = (88.9-76.19)/2 = 6.355 mm
t/r = 6.355 / (76.19/2) = 0.166
Since t/r < 0.1, we can consider pressure vessel to be \"thin\".
Hoop stress = P*d/(2t)
= 1800*(76.19) / (2*6.355)
= 10790 kPa
Since 10790 kPa > 9652.4 kPa, allowable stress value was exceeded in testing. This was not acceptable.
