Find the tensile design capacity tPn based on gross section

Find the tensile design capacity, tPn, based on gross section yielding (GSY), of each rolled steel shape given below. Determine the maximum length of the member that can be used without exceeding the AISC-14 slenderness recommendation for tension members. a) W14x82, A992 b) C7x9.8, A36 c) L5x3-1/2x1/2, A588 Gr. 50 d) 2-L4x3x3/8 (long legs back to back, no space), A572 Gr. 55 e) WT6x36, A992

Solution

a) Gross section area of w14x82=24.1 in2

Tension capacity = 0.9*50*24.1=1084.5 kips

b)Gross area of C7x9.8 = 2.87 in2

Tension capacity = 0.9*36*2.87=92.99 kips

c)Area of L5x3 -1/2x1/2 = 4 in2

Tension capacity = 0.9*50*4=180 kips

d)gross area of 2-L4x3x3/8 = 2*2.48=4.96 in2

Tension capacity = 0.9*55*4.96=245.52 kips

e)Area of WT6x36 = 10.6 in2

Tension capacity = 0.9*50*10.6=477 kips

Find the tensile design capacity, tPn, based on gross section yielding (GSY), of each rolled steel shape given below. Determine the maximum length of the membe
