Formal Lab Report Format Biology 1A/1B Dr. Leslie Blackie The following is a summary of standard formal laboratory report form. This is an important skill to develop for anyone going into a research field for any scientific discipline. It is also a vital skill for the evaluation of published studies i. Four formal lab reports are due by the end of the semester. 2. Lab reports should be turned in typed or written neatly in pen. 3. Formal lab reports are due at the beginning of the class, one week after the lab was executed. 4. Always write in complete sentences and use paragraph form. I. Purpose/ Hypothesis Statement a. State the purpose of the lab b. State the question you are attempting to answer, or the theory to be tested. II. Materials/ Methods a. Briefly describe the experimental design and the materials used. b. How was the experiment preformed? III. Results a. State your findings based on observed data b. Describe the results of the experiment. Include control, as well as experimental samples Include all units c. Graphs must have both axis labeled and units present. Graphs may be in pen on graph paper, or drawn with uniform measure d. Data tables must be labeled with units present. These may also be drawn in pen. Do not allow data tables continue on to the next page if not properly labeled DO NOT TAMPER WITH DATA TO ACHIVE BETTER RESULTS. IV. Discussion/ Error Analysis a. Explain, discuss your results b. Answer any question posed in the lab handout or lab manual in this section. c. Think of several factors that may have affected your experiment. Discuss how these factors could have affected your experimental findings
