Joy Smith wants to provide punch for a family reunion she is hosting. She is expecting 280 guests and wants to have enough punch for 3 servings per guest. She has plenty of Solo cups left over from her last party and believes that 12 ounces is a good serving size. The local warehouse retailer sells 3.5 quart jugs of premixed punch for $1.99 each. They also sell punch by the case for $10.59. Each case holds 6 jugs. Joy decides that buying cases is cheaper. How much will Joy spend for the punch?

Solution

We know that 1 liquid quart = 32 fluid ounces. Joy Smith is expecting 280 guests at a family reunion. She wants to have enough punch for 3 servings per guest and believes that 12 ounces is a good serving size. Thus, Joy Smith will require 280*3*12 = 100080 ounces of punch. We know that 1 liquid quart = 32 fluid ounces. Hence 100080 ounces = 100080/32 = 315 quarts. Each case of punch holds 6 jugs of 3.5 quarts each. Thus each case has 6*3.5 = 21 quarts of punch. Since Joy Smith requires 315 quarts of punch, the number of cases required by her is 315/21 = 15. Further, since each case of punch costs $10.59, hence Joy Smith will have to spend 15*10.59 = $ 158.85 for the punch. The answer is $ 179.10.

Note:

Had Joy Smith decided to buy punch by jugs, she would have required 315/3.5 = 90 jugs. Since jugs of punch cost $1.99 each, she would have spent 90*1.99 = $179.10 on punch. Thus, buying cases of 6 jugs each is a cheaper option.
