4. An offshore oil rig will drill into the ocean floor which is located 1 mile below the water surface. Determine the pressure at that location (i.e. at 1 mile ocean depth). Could a human body withstand that pressure? What would happen to an unprotected, exposed person at that depth? (2360 psi)

Solution

Solution:-

1 atmospheric pressure = 14.7 psi

1 mile = 1609 meter

On every 10 meter depth in ocean, pressure increase 14.7 psi

Pressure at 1 mile deep in ocean = (1609/10) * 14.7

                                                            = 2365 psi    Answer

A protected human body can withstand 2365 psi pressure.

Un protected ,exposed person will kill at this pressure . A person could die from bleeding into lungs.
