In a flat belt drive (open configuration), a 3-in-diameter small pulley rotates at 1750 rpm at a power level of 3.0 hp. The velocity ratio is 0.5, and the center-to-center distance is 12 ft. Assume the tight-side tension is 212 lbf, what is the slack-side(i.e. loose-side) tension?

Solution

N1 = 1750 rpm

D1 = 3 in

Power = 3 hp

Power(in HP) = T (in in.lbf)* N(in rpm)/63025

Torque= 108 lbf.in

T1 - T2 = 108*2/3 = 72

T1 = 212 lbf

T2 = 212 -72 = 140 lbf
